The Return (forever a wip)
Name: Kadin Brimmer
Age: 155 years
Species: Melded Demon
Appearance: He looks like an average human. He's roughly 5'10" with brown hair, blue eyes. Current PB is Josh Stewart. Art by Colin Moore
Under duress his skin and eye color can change. Especially after intense use of his abilities.
Origins:
Demons in this universe are created with pieces of the souls of the damned. Each demon has a fragment of a soul that gives them life. That fragment also makes them easy to control by a single compelling force. Kadin was born via the merging of three demons. Though unaware, he retains the powers of all three parents. This makes him extremely powerful... if he knew about it.
His creation was an accident. The three demons were attempting to gain freewill, which in this case also means gaining a soul. Essentially, they were trying to become human. They followed a very dangerous and lengthy ritual only to find themselves destroyed at its end.
In a way, they did succeed. Kadin has both a soul and freewill. He doesn't retain the personalities of his 'parents' but he will occasionally recover one of their memories.
Powers:
Overall, Kadin is stronger and more durable than the average person. He's not fully aware of all his powers but here they are:
Fire - He is completely immune to fire. (Sadly his clothes are not.) He can also control and manifest fire but these are skills he's not aware of. He just believes he has limited control over fire and can't create it.
Earth - He has no idea he has this power. All he knows is that dirt seems to like him. This power at its full potential would allow him to create golems. But that's a long way off.
Incubus - He is COMPLETELY aware of this power. He is a vampire of sexual energies as well as other strong emotions. He can also sense emotions in others, especially those hidden or repressed.
The harvesting of energies is based on proximity. He doesn't need to be in direct contact in order to feed but it helps. His usual feeding habit is to skim, a barely detectable drain. Doing more than skimming has its risks. For one, his target can become of aware of him but the far greater risk is inadvertently pulling his target's emotions toward him. Emotions pulled toward him can shift to be directed at him. For example, an angry target would start to feel anger for Kadin specifically instead of what they are actually mad at. Needless to say, he tries to avoid this method of feeding.
Outside of the accidental redirecting emotions, targets will feel strangely tired when fed upon.
Additionally, Kadin can use the energy he collects to heal himself.
Personality
On the surface, Kadin seems like a loser. He has no higher aspirations and does the bare minimum he needs to survive. He's the type to take on odd-jobs over steady ones.
While Kadin's personality has changed over the decades a few key things remain the same. He places a huge importance on the autonomy of others, as well as himself. It stems partly from just having a soul but more from his own hatred of being controlled. He goes out of his way to bend rules, specifically those of being an incubus, in order to respect the autonomy of others. In other words, consent is extremely important to him.
He's drawn to concepts relating to balance and equivalency. As in, everything is a give and take. His idea of balance may look funny but its a concept that keeps him sane, so he hangs onto it.
He's not exactly a good person either but he isn't outright malicious. He's something of an empath which shapes many of his actions. He doesn't like the feel or taste of negative emotions, so he tries to make people feel better. Usually done through humor. Humor and distraction are his go-to's for stressful situations, be them stressful for others or himself.
He doesn't quite fit into either the human world or demon world, because of that craves a sense of belonging. He managed to find himself that sense more than once but they've always been fleeting.
As he's gotten older he's become very blunt and straight forward. He's less interested in societal rules of conduct, not out of rebellion but boredom. Even so he generally treats people with some respect until he's given a reason not to. Basically, if you're a dick to him, he'll be a dick back.
Kadin has something of an overactive mind. Boredom gets him antsy and in search of ways to amuse himself. This can lead him to do strange things. Anything from doodling to anthropomorphizing an object and talking to it.
When it comes to relationships, Kadin is routinely pessimistic about them. Loved ones have been used to control him in the past and he's not too keen on letting that happen again. At the same time, he craves companionship. Relationships are further complicated by his incubus traits where one person isn't enough - even if he badly wants them to be. He has an energy 'quota' he needs to meet.
Most of all, under the jokes and smiles, Kadin is lonely.
Working for Hell:
The powers that be in Hell, have convinced Kadin he's nothing more than an incubus. While they cannot directly control him like other demons, they can and do manipulate him in other ways. Such as emotional manipulation and blackmail. These days the emotional manipulation has more of a hold on him than anything else.
That brings us to his job, acting as an incubus means he's essentially an energy collector. Hell runs on two things: damned souls and sinful energy, Kadin is responsible for the latter. He's required to return with a certain amount of energy on a regular basis, his 'quota'.
If he fails to meet his quota, other demons are sent out to fuck up Kadin's life and at worst, capture him and return him to hell.
History: WIP full history
Kadin was found abandoned as a baby in 1860s Missouri and raised human. His adopted father, William Brimmer, was something of a snake-oil salesmen. This led them to travel extensively across the western US and Canada.
Everything seemed fine and Kadin was being prepped to follow in his father's footsteps but soon his powers started to manifest. Specifically, his fire related abilities. Open flames would grow stronger the closer he was to them. On the plus side, his campfires never went out. On the minus side, if Kadin had any sort of nightmare it would cause near-by flames to jump their confines and start a larger blaze. This didn't start causing trouble until the inn they were staying at burned down. Kadin was found completely unharmed in the rubble the next day.
These uncontrolled fire powers were what killed his adoptive father in 1884. This devastated Kadin which led him down a self-destructive path. He blamed himself so deeply he thought making himself suffer was the only logical response. In a way, he was trying to kill himself by no longer caring what happened. He found his way to some of the seediest parts of the world and did nothing that was good for him. He tried every drug and drink offered.
He spent the next twenty years bouncing from place to place in a haze. He had no direction and no care to have one. He would get in pointless fights just to get hurt.
